Oppose the Israeli devastation of Gaza!

The small but densely-populated Gaza Strip is being pulverized by thousands of bombs. Neighborhoods and infrastructure are being destroyed. The death toll is mounting, over 4,000 Gazans have been killed, and whatever statistics are given in this article, the reality will be much worse by the time it is read. No one in Gaza is safe, no matter what type of building they are in, residences, hospitals, or refugee camps, and even 15 UN aid workers have been killed by the bombardment. (1) Human Rights Watch reports that Israel has also resorted to using white phosphorus (a napalm-like chemical) in some of its strikes. Meanwhile there is a blockade against water, food, fuel and electricity getting to Gaza, which puts people into an extremely desperate condition. Only a tiny trickle of aid is finally being let in after two weeks of bombardment. A horrible catastrophe is taking place in Gaza, threatening to eclipse the numerous previous Israeli attacks on Gaza. (2)

The bombing displaced an eighth of the population of Gaza in a few days, but the Israeli military has gone further and demanded that everyone north of Wadi Gaza, or about 1.1 million people, half the population of Gaza, should immediately leave what’s left of their homes in northern Gaza and evacuate to the equally-blockaded and attacked south. This suggests that the Israeli government may be considering a permanent displacement of the population. What it has declared is that that it will carry out a major punitive incursion into Gaza in the name of destroying Hamas, but in which much of Gaza will itself be destroyed. This will be collective punishment of an entire people, leaving them with little if anything to live with.

The fighting isn’t just in Gaza, but clashes are also taking place in the West Bank. Even before October 7, over 200 Palestinians were killed earlier this year by armed extremist Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Israeli soldiers. It has now gotten worse. The Israeli army has imposed a lockdown on the West Bank, making it hard to enter or leave Palestinian towns and cities. This applies, of course, only to Palestinians, and the army not only attacks Palestinians itself but gives a free hand to armed Israeli settlers, who have stepped up actions against Palestinian villages. It is reported that Israeli police are set to supply the settlers with M-16 rifles. There are also clashes on the border between Lebanon and Israel, and Israel has bombed two Syrian airports.

The current increase in fighting began on October 7, when the armed wing of Hamas, the al-Qassam Brigades, attacked across the fortified border wall into Israel in “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” (also translated as Al-Alqsa Deluge). Hamas surprised the Israeli troops, crossed the heavily fortified border walls, and successfully attacked a number of Israeli military bases, but also made a point of attacking civilian areas, taking hostages, and slaughtering a number of civilians, including 260 people at a music festival. And day after day, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have fired thousands of rockets indiscriminately throughout Israel. Thus the civilian carnage was not an accident, but an integral part of Hamas’s offensive; this atrocity says a lot about the nature of the leadership of Hamas. It does not justify the barbaric Israeli devastation of Gaza, or discredit Palestinian resistance as a whole, and the Israeli revenge kills far more than Hamas ever did. Nevertheless it is both a crime against its victims, and a betrayal of the Palestinian liberation struggle.

Denounce Israel's U.S.-supported slaughter in Gaza!

The following article is from Seattle Workers’ Voice, November 6, 2023, vol. 7, #3, which called on people to take part in the weekly demonstrations every Saturday at 3:00 pm at the Westlake Center (4th & Pine).

In the Gaza Strip, population 1.9 million, the high-tech Israeli armed forces have now murdered over 10,000 men, women and children. Refugee camps, residential neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, ambulances and more have all been bombed, and no place is safe for the people. They're also hungry and thirsty due to the Israeli blockade (the UN says the average Palestinian resident is living on two pieces of Arabic bread a day, yet the main refrain from the street is “water, water”), and hospitals often must run without electricity. But amidst the rubble and horror, the Gazans are showing great mass heroism as they struggle to save their comrades. They're also crying out to the people of the world for assistance.

In the West Bank,--Palestinian population 2.5 million--prior to October 7, Israeli settler land-grabbing was already increasing, with the settler population reaching 1/2 million. But after October 7, this is dramatically being dramatically stepped up. Palestinians have woken up to find notes on their doors saying “get out or be killed,” and in a little more than three weeks 155 Palestinians have been killed, 2,000 injured and nearly 1,000 others forcibly displaced. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) give the settlers automatic rifles with which to accomplish this, as well as directly participating.

Behind this is the Zionist vision of creating a Jewish state from the sea to the Jordan River, or even beyond. (1) But to accomplish this the majority Arab population had to be driven out. Thus, in 1938 Zionist David Ben Gurion, who would later become Israel's first prime minister, was saying,“I am for compulsory transfer; I do not see anything immoral in it.” Thus, there was nothing immoral about the Zionist military forces expelling at least 750,000 Palestinians, destroying over 530 of their villages and massacring 15,000 of them in order to set up a Jewish state in 1948. And in 1948, Ben Gurion also said: "We must do everything to insure they [the Palestinians] never do return. The old will die and the young will forget." Today, Netanyahu's Likud Party program says that “between the Sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereignty,” while a number of Israeli right-wing politicians publicly call for driving the Gazans into Egypt.

Some movement issues

The Zionists charge anyone opposing their state and its policies with ANTISEMITISM, and they ridiculously lay this charge against the Palestine solidarity movement even though large numbers of Jews are involved in it. But with swastikas now being painted on synagogues and assaults on Jews, it's clear that real antisemitism remains an issue in society. Moreover, tiny groups of neo-nazis and white nationalists have begun to infiltrate pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the east, where they were denounced.

ISLAMOPHOBIA. Seeing so many Arabs and Muslims marching in the streets is stirring the islamophobes to violence. In Illinois, an Islamophobic landlord murdered a 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy with a knife, and seriously wounded his Palestinian mother. Assaults on Muslim women have increased. At Stanford University, a driver accelerated his vehicle in order to run over a Muslim student, and then drove away while shouting, “f++k you people.”

HAMAS is led by fundamentalist-reactionaries who won the 2006 election with 44% of the vote, but have never held another. They're now corrupt, they send the police to crush protests, and they try to force their morality onto the Gazan women, LGBTQ people and youth. And their resistance strategy has been to indiscriminately lob missiles into Israel that usually killed civilians. The October 7 Al-Aqsa Flood raid continued this strategy, but this time Hamas murdered hundreds of innocent Jewish-Israelis, dozens of Arab-Israelis, and at least 50 migrant workers, most of whom were from Thailand. And also this time it took at least 242 people hostage.

So this was a crime, and pointing out that the Zionist's crimes are much larger than it doesn't hide the fact that it was. What's more, it acted to push Israeli Jews into the arms of Netanyahu and the worst ultra-Zionists, who conflate the entire Palestinian national struggle with Hamas, and who use this to to justify their present slaughter in Gaza. Meanwhile, a small part of the solidarity movement actually supports the Al-Aqsa Flood raid, while a larger part remains silent about it. This will not do. Many people outside the movement rightly sympathize with the innocent victims of the Hamas attack and they rightly sympathize with the Palestinians, but they're going to question joining a movement that won't speak against Hamas and October 7. After all, such actions as Al-Aqsa Flood drive a wedge between the Palestinian cause and the mass of working people around the world, when the unity of working people everywhere for the Palestinian cause is needed.

The Zionist press pundits are stepping up propaganda against the slogan, “FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA, PALESTINE WILL BE FREE!” They say it means the Muslims (and not all Palestinians are Muslim) want to oppress the Jews in a new state, drive them out, etc. But they know this is a lie. The historic demand of the Palestinian national movement has been for one secular and democratic state from the river to the sea: one person, one vote. And after the 1948 Nakba, the demand for the right of return of the refugees was added. In the early 90s, however, under pressure from Washington, the dominant Fatah party, plus some other parties in the PLO abandoned this solution in favor of a two-state solution. (This threw the Palestinian movement into a crisis that has yet to resolved.) But while the Zionist leaders agreed to talk, they were never going to agree to letting the refugees return to Israeli soil, nor were they going to agree to having a viable Palestinian state next door. Thus, while the talking went on and on, the Zionists built their apartheid separation wall and segregated road system, they steadily increased the settlements in the West Bank, and they committed atrocity after atrocity against the Palestinians. Biden, who knows this history, is now giving speeches advocating the two-state non-solution. In this way he's pretending to be a man of peace while arming Israel as it slaughters the Gazans.

And Biden is rightfully being targeted by the movement. He has increased military aid to Israel; he's sent aircraft carrier groups to back up the IDF; he refuses to call for a ceasefire, thus giving Israel the go-ahead; the U.S. was one of a very few nations in the UN to vote against a call for a ceasefire.

Join and build the Palestine solidarity movement!

Identification with the Palestinian cause, as encapsulated in the chant “we are millions, we are billions, we are all Palestinians,” is at the root of this global movement. The mass media is already saying that the demonstrations are the largest in 20 years. In numerous Western cities more than 100,000 people have marched in a day, and in the Arab and Muslim world, many hundreds of thousands or over a million people have marched. More protests are to come. And besides demonstrations, other mass actions are taking place, such as the attempts to block an Israeli military vessel in the ports of Oakland and Tacoma. Also notable is that this great outpouring of support for the Palestinians has come in conditions where the demonstrators have had to defy national and local government bans on pro-Palestinian protests in France, Germany, Austria and Hungary, and suffer police beatings and hundreds of arrests. Meanwhile, the situation in Israel is fascist. Arab Israelis are liable to be hauled off in the middle of the night just for mentioning the word “Gaza” on social media. And the small Jewish demonstrations are attacked by the cops and Zionist thugs. But despite all this, the Jewish Israelis recently had a protest in front of Netanyahu's house, and they persist. We should too.

Stop bombing Gaza!

After the pause in fighting in order to exchange prisoners for hostages, Israel has now intensified it's bombing of the Gaza strip. As of this writing, at least 16,000 Palestinians have been massacred by Israeli airstrikes and shelling since October 7. Thousands more are missing and feared buried in rubble. And some 70% of those killed are women and children. Further, nearly 80% of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been forced to abandon their homes with only the clothes on their backs. First, the Israeli military told them to move south, mainly on foot, but it bombed the south too. Now it tells them to move closer to the Egyptian border and the Mediterranean coast, but it still bombs them. No place is safe. Moreover, Israel began cutting off desperately needed food, water, fuel and medical supplies some two months ago. All of this is criminal, and the bombing must be stopped!

Meanwhile, prior to October 7 the Jewish settler land-grabbing had been increasing in the West Bank, with the settler population reaching 1/2 million. Now, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) supplying the settlers with rifles and often directly participating in their atrocities, 248 Arab-Palestinians have been murdered in less than two months.

Demonstrations against Israel’s murderous campaign in Gaza spread widely

Israel’s murderous campaign against the Palestinian people is being denounced far and wide as genocide. Since a temporary ceasefire ended, Israel has expanded its attack on Gaza, announcing that people who have moved south to escape Israeli bombing must now move again, further south, Two million people are supposed to be squeezed into two square miles around the town of Rafah, at the extreme southern border of Gaza. Outrage against this has led to very large demonstrations in Amman, Jordan; Sanaa, Yemen; Sidon, Lebanon; Johannesburg, South Africa; Vienna, Austria; and, notably, Hebron, the West Bank. Also, there have been dozens of demonstrations across Australia in recent weeks as protesters tried to interrupt weapons shipments to Israel and disrupt normal parliamentary functions. In most places, demonstrators face repression for daring to raise political issues and to make rulers face up to their support for genocide. In many places, certain slogans like “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” are banned by police, who stand by ready to break up any demonstration that dares to raise this cry.

Gaza protests defy repression

Protests against the Israeli massacre of Palestinian civilians continued in January despite the attempts to suppress them under the guise of “opposing antisemitism.” The latest large demonstration in the United States was held on Saturday, January 13, in Washington, D.C. (1) On the same day, similar protests were held in London, Paris, Rome, and Dublin. The demo in Washington was sponsored by national Islamic coalitions, but as at other such demonstrations Jewish activists played a prominent role in the march. Those present said that as Jews they felt a special responsibility in calling on Israel to stop bombing Gaza. The general demands of the demonstration were for an immediate ceasefire and release of all hostages; also, release of all political prisoners and an end to the occupation.

In early January right-wing politicians in the U.S. were celebrating their victory over the so-called liberal establishment that allegedly controls American universities. After browbeating the presidents of Harvard, MIT and the University of Pennsylvania in congressional hearings, MAGA Republican lawmakers were able to force two of them to resign. ...

But student organizations at many colleges were not intimidated. For example, at Ohio State University the administration suspended a student group called Central Ohio Revolutionary Socialists because they were carrying out political activity critical of Israel. But the students did not simply fold their tents and walk away quietly. Instead, they intensified their activity, this time broadening their work to include the fight for freedom of speech and association. Now they are involved in a petition campaign demanding reinstatement by the university. (2)

Off-campus activists have also been busy. In Seattle, demonstrations have been held nearly every weekend since October 7. ... College administrations faced demands from politicians in many states to suppress student organizations that uttered a voice of protest against the savage Israeli assault on the people of Gaza.

In California, activists began the new year by shutting down the opening session of the California state legislature. Masses of them occupied the state capitol in Sacramento and forced the legislature to adjourn without business as usual. (4) In New York, demonstrators blocked a major tunnel carrying traffic into Manhattan, and at the same time activists blocked a number of bridges into the city. Police arrested scores of activists, but that will not stop the demonstrations.

Internationally, as noted above, large demonstrations continue to be held in major European cities, including Copenhagen. (6) Protesters blocked bridges outside parliament in London on January 6 demanding that Britain give up its support for the Israelis’ offensive against the Palestinian people. (7) Demonstrations also continue in Canada, Australia, South Africa and other countries. Support for Palestinian liberation is more widespread than ever before, and the Israeli government is receiving widespread condemnation for its genocidal offensive against Gaza.

A review of posters, signs and graffiti around Seattle since October 7th

Since the early days after the October 7th Hamas attack on Israeli civilians, which sparked an over-the-top retaliation from Israel, the masses around the world have poured out their solidarity for the Palestinian people. This has appeared in multiple forms, but one notable one here in Seattle is the huge number of posters and graffiti which have been increasingly showing up around the city. Many of these are unsigned, and clearly put up by individuals and small groupings. This is in addition to the handmade signs held up at demonstrations, which represent a large majority of the total signs. Political graffiti is also burgeoning in Seattle. This includes numerous chalk messages on sidewalks, and well as more permanent marker and spray paint messages which are ubiquitous around the city. This survey tries to leave aside the posters and signs from the major organized groups, although the slogans reflect their influence among people.

The slogans vary in how effective or advisable some of them are, and a few of them may reflect mistaken viewpoints. But the overall effect of this is very enlivening, and reflects an strong desire among the masses to have their say on the issue. People aren't waiting for someone else to tell them what they can do; they're finding ways to express their bitter opposition to Israel's atrocities

In contrast, there has been very little pro-Israel expression. One campaign early on was full-color posters of Hamas hostages, under the banner “Missing”. These went up broadly in several neighborhoods around the city, and were answered with several pro-Palestinian posters, also spread widely in the city: “Wanted” posters, featuring Netanyahu and other Israeli officials, as well as Biden and other US officials; “Missing” posters for Palestinian prisoners held for years by Israel without charges; and “Missing” posters listing human rights, justice, and self-determination for Palestinians. The pro-Israel poster campaign ended quickly, as far as I saw, and has been followed up by only a very few posters here and there. Likewise, the early demonstrations always had a few pro-Israel counter-demonstrators the first month, though never more than 6-8 – initially aggressively in the middle of the crowd with their flags and signs, then as time passed, off to the side, and finally absent altogether for the last two months. This likely doesn't reflect that their zionist views have changed, but that they feel ashamed to stand up in public for what Israel is doing.

As Israel continues its murderous slaughter,
Support the Palestinian people more than ever!

From Seattle Workers’ Voice, March 1, 2024, vol. 8 #4:

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have presently killed more than 30,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, with thousands more missing. The majority killed have been civilians, with roughly 70% being women and children. In addition, some 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are now homeless due to the Israeli bombings, and they suffer from hunger, lack of water, medical supplies and other necessities because of the Israeli blockade. Meanwhile, Israel has been increasing its establishment of settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, where it has killed 383 Palestinians in less than five months.

Recent developments

Rafah. This city on the southern border of the Gaza Strip normally has a population of 300,000. But due to IDF's massive bombings to the north coupled with orders for civilians to evacuate, by early February some 1.3 million displaced Palestinians were sheltering there, often in tents or partially destroyed buildings. Then, Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu asked the military to plan the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people in preparation for a ground invasion. This resulted in some thousands of Palestinians heading toward the center of the strip on their own.

There were also stepped up Palestinian solidarity demonstrations around the world, while even Biden said Netanyahu's plan was “over the top.” But now, while Israel often mercilessly kills a hundred or more Palestinians a day with its bombings of Rafah, it's unclear whether its threatened ground invasion of the city will happen.

Temporary ceasefire talk. After the U.S. vetoed the February 20 UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Biden turned around to give an interview on February 26 in which he said that he hoped to have a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas worked out by March 2. Israel and Hamas downplayed this possibility, but *Reuters* reported that the Israeli war cabinet has approved a ceasefire for hostages deal, while other news outlets report that the pause will be during Ramadan (March 10 through April 9). But Netanyahu says that after any pause, his forces will press on with the planned ground attack on Rafah.

Starvation. The United Nations has warned that 2.2 million people in the Gaza Strip are on the brink of [Israeli-caused] famine. Indeed, Palestinians, especially children, are already dying of starvation due to the tightened Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. In other words, they're being murdered in Israel's collective punishment campaign.

And now, in the northern strip, where the famine is worst, on February 29 the IDF murdered in cold blood at least 112 people and wounded 760 as they rushed to get bags of flour from a rare aid truck. These were the fathers, sons and brothers of families who have been surviving for weeks by eating animal feed and whatever else they can find. People are calling it Flour Massacre, and it is a day that will be long remembered.

But the United States is also guilty of this murder of Palestinians by starvation. How? By late January nearly the entire Gazan population was relying on the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for basic necessities, including food, water and hygiene supplies, and more than 150 of its staff had been killed by the IDF. But immediately after the International Court of Justice ruled that the South African case that Israel was committing genocide was plausible, Israel claimed that 13 of UNRWA's 13,000 Gaza Strip employees had been involved in Hamas's October 7 raid into Israel that killed 766 civilians. And Biden immediately suspended UNRWA funding by the U.S., which was UNRWA's largest donor.

In this situation, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and France began cooperating to airdrop food into the Gaza Strip during the last days of February. And while airdropping is the most inefficient way of delivering aid, Canada said it would join the effort as soon as possible, and Biden announced on March 1 that the U.S. will also make airdrops.

Down with U.S. support for the theocratic and apartheid state of Israel!

The United States supplies 70% of all international transfers of major conventional weapons to Israel, and this is a bipartisan policy, a ruling class policy. The reason is that Israel is a key tool in its imperialist strategy to enforce order in the strategically located (e.g., Suez) and oil and gas rich Middle East. Another component of this imperialist strategy is that the U.S. is the main supplier of weapons to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the Egyptian military dictatorship—reactionaries all. Nevertheless, despite continued U.S. support, Biden and Netanyahu obviously have differences, with Biden's main worry being, “If [Israel] keeps this up with this incredibly conservative government they have...they’re going to lose support from around the world.” Well, the Israeli government has already lost an incredible amount of support around the world, especially among the youth, and that's a good thing!

Build the movement in solidarity with the Palestinian people

The movement that has risen in Seattle since October 7 has been very good, but it obviously must be built farther. Everyone can lend a hand in doing this by learning more about Palestine and its history; by talking about Gaza with friends, neighbors, fellow workers or fellow students; by sharing leaflets like this one, and by joining and bringing friends to the solidarity demonstrations and other events.

Supported by the U.S., Israel is Committing Mass Murder!

After starving Palestinians in northern Gaza had waited all night February 28-9 for trucks bearing flour, the Israeli army opened fire and killed around 100. More were killed in the chaos caused by the attack. Israeli tanks and trucks ran over many. Over 700 were wounded. The Israeli government despicably blamed the deaths on the Palestinians themselves “stampeding.” U.S. imperialist news sources, the New York Times among others, wrote that there was much blood shed, but also disgustingly blamed the Palestinians for “stampeding.” Evidently, if you are being shot you are blamed if you “stampede!” This was simply a mass murder by Israel, supported by the U.S.

This catastrophic situation has aroused worldwide condemnation. Huge, continuing protest demonstrations have broken out all over the world, demanding a cease-fire and condemning both Israel and U.S. imperialism for crimes against humanity. Even in Israel, despite the blood frenzy whipped up by the Zionist leadership, a small anti-war movement mustered demonstrations of a few thousand in Tel Aviv and Haifa in January, calling for an end to the war.

This crisis will greatly worsen. Netanyahu may delay the assault on Rafah, but the Palestinian masses are still his targets. Biden has been conducting air-drops of humanitarian supplies, but the amount of aid this brings is minuscule. A threat by Biden to cut off military aid could lead to more trucking, a much more efficient method of supply, which Israel has all but blocked. But Biden has consistently refused to block aid to genocidal Israel. And now, rather than cutting off military aid, Biden is having the U.S. Navy build a new port at Gaza in a weak effort in increase humanitarian aid to the Palestinians. If Netanyahu could be forced to allow trucking supplies in, conditions would rapidly improve. Biden's cockamamie port scheme will take as much as 30 to 60 days merely to construct a temporary pier, while a whole slew of complex problems may threaten the whole operation. Meanwhile Palestinians starve and die and a possible murderous assault could take place on Rafah. Biden's new scheme will use trucking from the port while the obstacles Israel puts up to trucking are extreme, so that is not solved. This port scheme is just an elaborate cover-up, an attempt to make the U.S. government look like it's concerned for the plight of the Palestinians.
