Sudan: Resistance committees organize ongoing struggle

by Pete Brown, Detroit Workers’ Voice

In June resistance committees (RCs) in Sudan continued the struggle to overthrow the military junta. The RCs received some limited recognition from Western bourgeois governments when a high-level American diplomat invited their Coordination Committee to a meeting at the U.S. embassy in Khartoum. But meanwhile bloody struggle in the streets of Khartoum continues, and the meeting has not resulted in any breakthroughs. The U.S. and other Western governments remain opposed to the RCs coming to power because they see a revolutionary people as a greater threat than a dictatorship they can make deals with.
  • Continued, persistent struggle
  • Demonstrations every Monday and every other Thursday
    [*}Economic strikes
  • US government opposes the three No's of the resistance committees
[*}India and China keep pumping oil from Sudan

It’s good to follow up on Sudan.

It is a dramatic story that the Resistance Committees have survived despite the horrible, repressive and bloody conditions there. It would be useful to get a picture of what they are doing, and it would demonstrate the activity of the masses under unbelievably difficult conditions. The ordinary news talks a lot about the horrible massacres. But there is also the story of what the masses are doing despite the massacres and the bloody interference from outside.

But I have doubts about the recommendations to the RCs. Is there any serious possibility that the pro-democracy forces could militarily resist the two reactionary armies? Or that the communities and activists who support the Resistance Committees would support attempts at such military action?
